ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is a global network identifying international standards required by business, and government.

The ISO 9001:2000 standard specifies requirements for a quality management system for any organization that needs to demonstrate its ability to consistently provide product that meets customer, regulatory requirements and aims to enhance customer satisfaction.
The ISO 9001 standard is not a product standard. It does not include any technical requirements.

The requirements in the ISO 9001 are complimentary to but not substitutes for distinct product technical requirements. ISO has two primary roles; the first being a standard of generic requirements against which a customer can evaluate the adequacy of a supplier's quality system.

The second is to provide guidance to businesses that want to implement effective quality systems in their organizations or to improve their existing quality systems.
